We are glad you are considering visiting United Christian Church! Below, you'll find some of the questions that we get asked most often by first-time guests. If you have a question that is not answered here, please feel free to call us at 218-8110 or contact us using the online contact form.
Wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing is fine. Some of us dress up and other dress down. You can wear pearls and heels or casual slacks and a sport shirt, jeans or even shorts on a hot summer day. Children may have art projects or outdoor activities, so they should dress casually for active play.
Three worship services are held from 8:30 - 9:15 am, 9:30 to 10:30 am, and 10:45 to 11:45 am.
Children over the age of eight remain in the worship service, while younger children stay for the first 15-20 minutes for a gathering song and the Time for Children at the front of the sanctuary. After that they go to Children’s Church for the remainder of worship.
Sunday School classes for children are held from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Youth classes are held from 10:45 to 11:45 am.
Childcare for infants and toddlers is always available on Sundays from 8:30 am to 12:00 noon.
YES! If you find that you need to step out with your child, you can go to the rear of the sanctuary and into the Fellowship Hall. Or, you may choose to attend Children’s Church with your child if that works best in the beginning. Children of any age may take part in worship with the grown-ups.
We have three worship services: 8:30 am, 9:30 am, and 10:45 am. Communion is served in all three services every Sunday.
The 8:30 service lasts 45 minutes and is contemplative in nature. There is singing, meditation, reading, and a short sermon by our pastor.
Our 9:30 and 10:45 services involve congregational singing, choral music, meditations, readings and a sermon by our pastor. The 9:30 service lasts one hour; the 10:45 service is over by 12:00 noon. After the 10:45 service we have “Coffee and Conversation” in the Fellowship Hall.
No, you won't be pressured to be saved or join. When you are a guest at our church we will welcome you at the door. If you give us your email address, we'll send you our newsletter for a while. We'd be happy to have you join us, but we won't push ourselves onto you. We will never ask you to join on a first visit; we recommend you visit several times before you consider joining. Your faith is important; we’d love to talk to you about it, but we know that it a personal matter.
If you are interested in joining United Christian Church, we offer a class, "Prospective New Member Class" several times a year. During this class you will learn more about us. As a member of the church you will be asked to donate to continue the work of the church.
Yes. All four restrooms and all doorways are wheelchair accessible. There is a curb cut for wheelchairs as well as a ramp to the Fellowship Hall. Hearing devices are available every Sunday. Please ask the ushers for assistance.
Yes, we believe we are all God's children and we are an Open & Affirming congregation. We gather to worship, honoring our differences in age, race, gender, ability, class, sexual orientation, and national origin. Being an Open and Affirming (ONA) congregation is more than just a technical, legalistic term; it’s a way of life. For our church, it means we strive to include all who walk through our doors and welcome them into the life of UCC. We accept them as deacons, as elders, as Sunday School teachers and more. Every member of United Christian Church is invited and welcome to attend our monthly ONA meetings. Please check the website calendar for the meeting dates and times.
On June 10, 2007 the congregation unanimously voted to be an Open & Affirming (ONA) Congregation and approved the following statement:
"We, the congregation of The United Christian Church, declare ourselves to be an open and affirming congregation, embracing diversity and affirming the dignity and worth of every person created in God's image. We welcome into full membership and participation in the Body of Christ persons of every race, ethnic background, age, gender, gender expression/identity, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, social-economic background, marital status and faith background. We welcome all to share in the life, leadership, ministry, fellowship, worship, sacraments, responsibilities and blessings of participation in our congregation."
On February 12, 2012 the congregation amended the ONA statement to read:
